Derek Slesinger Obituary, Death; Body found near Lava Island Falls in Central Oregon identified as missing tourist

A Joyful Day Turned Tragic: Remembering Derek Slesinger

What began as a peaceful day floating down the Deschutes River ended in unspeakable tragedy for Derek Slesinger, a 33-year-old beloved son, friend, and adventurer from Newark, Delaware. On July 19, 2025, Derek lost his life after being swept over Dillon Falls, a dangerous stretch of rapids located just upstream from Bend, Oregon. He was one of three individuals who perished during the accident; two others, Amanda Loyd of Texas and Lindsay Bashan of Florida, also lost their lives.

Derek and five companions had tethered their inner tubes together, unknowingly floating toward the falls after enjoying what they believed was a tranquil section of the river. Warning signs posted near the shore were tragically overlooked. Three members of the group managed to swim to safety, but Derek and two others were swept over the powerful rapids.

For weeks, his body remained missing—his family held on to hope and heartbreak in equal measure. On August 27, more than a month after the accident, Derek’s remains were discovered at Lava Island Falls, roughly three miles downstream, by visiting kayakers.

 A Community’s Relentless Search and a Mother’s Painful Goodbye

The search for Derek became one of the most extensive operations in recent Deschutes County history. With the unwavering dedication of over 60 volunteers, 5 marine deputies, and full-time staff, more than 2,300 man-hours were poured into the rescue and recovery effort. The treacherous nature of the water, combined with the geography of the falls, made each day of searching more difficult and emotionally exhausting.

Throughout the ordeal, Derek’s mother, Diana Adames, remained by the riverbanks, waiting and hoping for closure. In a statement following the discovery of Derek’s body, she expressed immense gratitude to the Search and Rescue team, saying:

“I spent numerous days on the river and was treated with immense respect and kindness. They exceeded expectations, dedicating more time than anyone could imagine.”

Though the river claimed her son, it also introduced her to the compassion of strangers who fought tirelessly to bring Derek home.

Derek’s Legacy: A Life Lived with Laughter, Heart, and Adventure

To those who knew Derek, he will never be defined by the tragic way his life ended—but by the vibrant way he lived it. He was known for his quick wit, big laugh, and boundless curiosity. A true lover of the outdoors, Derek lived for travel, hiking, and river adventures. His warmth made people feel at ease; his loyalty made friendships last a lifetime.

He was the kind of person who could lift a room with his smile and calm a storm with his words. Derek’s presence was a gift to all who knew him. Now, his absence is a wound that will take time—and love—to heal.

Derek leaves behind a grieving family, countless friends, and a legacy of light that not even the darkest waters could drown. May his memory be a blessing, and may his spirit forever flow with the river he so loved.
