New York, NY – August 2025 — The city of New York, the FDNY, and the lacrosse community are mourning the devastating loss of Joe Herman, who tragically passed away in a motorcycle accident on the Southern State Parkway. Joe was a beloved firefighter, athlete, teammate, and friend — a man who wore many hats, all of them with heart, honor, and humility.
Joe was just getting started in so many ways. In his time with the New York City Fire Department, he earned the respect and admiration of his peers for his bravery, professionalism, and unwavering dedication to service. Whether charging into danger or sharing a laugh at the firehouse kitchen table, Joe brought energy, loyalty, and kindness to every moment. His brothers and sisters in the FDNY describe him as “the kind of guy you wanted by your side — in a fire, in life, in anything.”
A True Lacrosse Warrior, On and Off the Field
Before the firehouse, Joe’s passion was lacrosse — and it was on the field that many first saw his determination shine. He played collegiate lacrosse at both New York Institute of Technology (NYIT) and Nassau Community College, leaving a lasting legacy on and off the field.
Coaches recall his leadership, his work ethic, and the way younger players looked up to him not just for what he could do with a stick, but for the man he was beneath the helmet. He wasn’t the loudest voice in the room, but his presence carried weight. He led by example — pushing hard in practice, lifting others up after tough losses, and celebrating victories like they meant the world.
Even after graduating, Joe remained close to the lacrosse community, often volunteering time, mentoring young athletes, and showing up for his old teammates like only a true brother would.

Joe Herman’s passing is a reminder of how fragile life can be. He was a son, a brother, and a friend to many — a man with a bright smile, a sharp sense of humor, and a heart that never hesitated to help someone in need.
